The New Mexico Business Weekly honored 28 people who have made a mark in the technology field at its “Who’s Who in Technology” event Thursday.

About 250 attendees gathered for a reception at Intel Corp. in Rio Rancho to celebrate with the honorees. Guests were given an opportunity to test-drive a Formula 1 race car simulator; check out games, movies and data analysis in 3-D; and learn about cloud computing.

The event included a special award presented by Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) to Erika DeBenedictis, 18, of Albuquerque. An Albuquerque Academy student, she recently won the nationwide Intel Science Talent Search for developing a software navigation system to help improve spacecraft travel through the solar system, garnering a $100,000 prize. Gov. Bill Richardson attended the presentation to present the award, the first to a New Mexico student in the history of the program. More than 1,700 students competed for the award.

The Business Weekly assembled a panel of technology experts to select this year’s Who’s Who honorees. Judges were John Chavez of the New Mexico Angels, Ned Godshall of Altela Inc., Lem Hunter of Vibrant Corp., Stephanie Spong of Epic Ventures and Waneta Tuttle of Southwest Medical Ventures.

The Who’s Who in Technology categories were created by the Business Weekly’s judges for the inaugural event in 2009. They include entrepreneurs, who create technology companies; facilitators, who help technology companies with the strategy and connections needed to succeed; investors, who provide financing for technology companies; technologists, who create scientific innovations; and corporate, major entities that contribute to large-scale technology job growth.

Who’s Who in Technology was sponsored by Intel, the New Mexico Technology Council and Sandia National Laboratories’ Small Business Utilization Department.
